Castellammare del Golfo, an overgrown fishing village, enjoys panoramic views across the gulf and, from the port, a boat ferries visitors to Lo Zingaro nature reserve. It is located in the province of Trapani and has today a number of 15,000 inhabitants. Up till today the fishing is one of the two most important sources of income (the other is tourism) and the beautiful blue and white painted fishing boats dominates the marina. Around the marina the fishermen are mending their nets under the Sicilian sun. The city is also blessed with a long, nice, sandy beach and a broad range of restaurants serving fresh delicacies from the sea.
The view from Castellammare over the Mediterranean sea is marvellous! The water is crystal clear and turquoise like in a tourist brochure. The houses are sweet and pastel-coloured and the beautiful castle dominates the contour of the city. From here you can take the ferry to the nature reserve Lo Zingaro for even more breathtaking nature and coast. And of course make excursions to San Vito lo Capo and Scopello, two wellknown and beautiful cities nearby.
Castellammare del Golfo is a genuine, traditional Sicilian coastal city, but offers also a servicemindedness and an international appearence during the months of summer. It has the positive effect that here is plenty of restaurants, bars and shops to be found.
The town has a fortunate situation right in the middle of two airports – Palermo and Trapani. It takes around 30 minutes to go to them both, which gives flexibility in the travelling.
The town has a dramatic and bloody past, of which none is to be found today. In the 1950s around 80 percent of the male population had been in jail and the internecine Mafia wars led the port to become the chief embarkation point to the United States. Today locals joke that so many of the old mafiosi were killed that only dumb innocents remain. It is remarkably easy to get in contact with people here, and even though there are many tourists here during the summer months, an incredible helpfulness. And no, Castellammare of today is not a Mafia city, it is history!
Interesting detail: The father of Sylvester Stallones pappa is from Castellammare del Golfo.
