St. Ambrogio, Cefalu and the Madonie Park
St. Ambrogio is a small village, situated high on a hill overlooking the sea. The old town is typically Sicilian and is located around a village square where the locals can usually be found playing cards and ‘putting the world to rights’.
The town, which has some 1,000 residents, has a small supermarket, a post office, two bars, two highly regarded restaurants and its own beach. Due to its close proximity to Cefalu (approximately 3 miles) St Ambrogio is fast becoming one of the most desirable areas on the Northern Coast and consequently, property is becoming difficult to find.
Cefalu itself is a thriving holiday destination, thanks to a long sandy beach and a coastline considered to be one of the most beautiful on the island. However the town has retained its medieval appearance and its glorious Romanesque cathedral still towers over the network of narrow streets lined with buildings featuring elaborate architectural decoration. The fishermen’s quarter, with its old houses clustered along the seafront, is a reminder of days gone by and is still in operation to this day.
The area provides a gateway to the Madonie Park. Established in 1989, the area plays host to a wide variety of indigenous birds and animals including some 70 species of brightly coloured butterflies. Extending over some 98,000 areas, the park is densely wooded and provides endless scope for walkers, hikers and campers.
